Sight Concern Bedfordshire (SCB) is a local independent charity that aims to enhance the independence and quality of life of the blind and partially sighted people of Luton and Bedfordshire. SCB assist individuals who have a sight impairment (SI) or severe sight impairment (SSI) that cannot be corrected through wearing glasses or contact lenses. There is no requirement to be registered as sight impaired or to meet any other eligibility criteria to qualify for this assistance. Services currently rely upon client donations, local authority contracts & NHS (PCT) contracts.
Sight Concern Bedfordshire provides the following services;
Sight Concern Bedfordshire Services:
- Accompanied Shopping - (currentlyLuton only)
- Annual Service User Event – to meet friends, talk to us about their needs, concerns & interests & to find out about support & current issues that may impact on sight
- British Wireless for the Blind – agents to provide loan of free accessibly audio equipment, (subject to meeting BWftB criteria)
- Community Support Workers – home visits for up to two years offering one to one practical support, advice & information. Includes advice on benefit entitlement & assisting with benefit claims
- Home Visiting – regular friendly social visits & companionship to help combat isolation and loneliness
- Hospital Information - notice Boards/displays/info packs
- Information & Advice – for service users and their families/carers
- IT Clubs & One to One IT Support - four clubs & linked home support enabling skill development and communication via technology)
- Listening Post – telephone befriending
- Low Vision Services – optometrist led assistance with appropriate magnifiers and advice on appropriate lighting. Training and guidance to make the most of remaining sight and access to SCB & other services
- My Guide – sighted guiding service
- Open Days – special events to find out about local services, aids to daily living equipment and allied support services for blind and visually impaired people or carers.
- Quarterly Newsletter – ‘News & Views’ available in a range of formats, with information about local issues, support, services aned what's on
- Resource Centres - try out or purchase from a range of aids to make everyday life easier or pick up some further information or advice
- Sighted Guide Training - for families, friends, organisations etc and
- Social Clubs – contact us for types and locations
- Studio for Audio Transcription & Braille – costs on application
- Talking Newspapers –in a variety of audio formats
- Talks & Presentations – to schools, organisations, groups etc
- Technology Support – information, advice and practical support
- Vision Screening – screening and information to help reduce avoidable sight loss
- Visual awareness Training - for families, friends, organisations etc
